Canada needs bold, nation-building action, and Bill C-5 is a welcome step in that direction. The Business Council of Alberta supports the spirit and ambition of this legislation. We are particularly encouraged by the Building Canada Act’s focus on getting major projects built faster and the Free Trade and Labour Mobility Act’s intent to reduce internal trade barriers and improve labour mobility across provinces. This sends a signal to investors that Canada is serious about growth, resilience, and prosperity.
The true impact of Bill C-5 will depend on how well it’s implemented. Success will require clear criteria for how major projects are selected and prioritized, meaningful consultation, and disciplined coordination across government. The policy landscape in Canada will also need to change to create the conditions for investment in major projects, and the resources and goods that will flow through, for right now Canada is a challenging place to attract investment. We urge the federal government to use this moment to build trust, create certainty, and investor confidence, because when Canada builds, Canadians benefit. We look forward to working with government to help bring this vision of One Canadian Economy to life.
We will provide further recommendations upon our continued analysis of the legislation as well as consultation with our members. Â Â
