In October, one of the Business Council of Alberta’s founding members and Board Vice-Chair, Mac Van Wielingen, presented a new and bold vision for the energy industry going forward to delegates at the Economic of Canada’s event, Canadian Energy: A New Vision Emerging.
We have a significant opportunity to lead the world in the transition to a low-carbon future, all while reducing emissions, growing the economy and encouraging innovation. In fact, we are already doing it. Consider these examples from Canadian energy producers:
- MEG and CNRL (Canada’s largest producer of oil and gas) have pledged to achieve net-zero emissions in their production
- Suncor just announced two co-generation power units that will produce as much benefit as removing 550,000 cars from the road
- Oil sands emissions intensity has dropped by 30% in the past two decades, with many operations producing emissions lower than the global production average
- Canada’s oil and gas industry is the nation’s largest investor in renewable energy with Enbridge having invested over $8 billion in renewables and more in emissions reductions and methane capture
- TC Energy is pursuing a groundbreaking utility-scale solar-plus-battery-storage electricity generation facility to demonstrate the practicality of renewable generation and viability of long duration battery storage
- Power producers and distributors like ATCO and TransAlta are working hard to reduce emissions through the phase-out of coal to increased natural gas and renewable power
If you missed the live stream of the event, please take a few minutes to watch this replay video. The presentation begins at minute 53:00.
We believe that this is an important message for not only our global partners, investors, and business leaders but also for us, as Canadians and Albertans.
