The Business Council of Alberta believes in a strong Alberta that is part of Canada. Canada is better when Alberta can contribute to its fullest potential.
We understand the frustration felt by some Albertans, which is fuelling discussion about separation. That frustration is rooted in valid concerns that Alberta is not treated fairly within the country.
We do not believe that separation is the solution. Last week’s Implementation Agreement is proof of what is possible when Alberta and Ottawa work together — advancing a pipeline and Canada’s energy superpower ambitions. It is an example of a shift by the federal government to recognize Alberta’s importance and unique contributions to the federation. We commend Premier Danielle Smith’s work with Prime Minister Carney to advance a fairer deal for Alberta.
There is more work to do, however, to address fairness in the federation and continue building a stronger relationship between Alberta and Ottawa. There are clear steps the federal government can take to demonstrate this commitment including reforming equalization and giving provinces greater control on immigration to better meet labour needs. These are examples of what would help address longstanding frustrations.
The Implementation Agreement demonstrated that progress is possible and that by working together we can tackle the issues that will unite us all.
