The time is now for the Government of Canada to urgently intervene and avoid an unprecedented and devastating rail stoppage. 

The Business Council of Alberta is calling on the government to take immediate and significant action to avoid the extensive damage to jobs, the economy, and Canada’s reputation that will result from such a stoppage.

A full stoppage on both national railways would be an economic disaster for Canada, costing jobs and worsening the affordability crisis facing many Canadian families.

We urge the Federal Minster of Labour to act with much greater urgency and involvement to protect the interest of Canadians, and to bring to bear all of the broad powers available to him and the Federal Government. While a negotiated settlement at the bargaining table is always optimal, given the potential for significant harm to Canadians, all options including interest arbitration and convening an emergency session of Parliament should be on the table now.
