The Business Council of Alberta Statement on Implementation Agreement

The Business Council of Alberta (BCA) congratulates Premier Smith and Prime Minister Carney on today’s Implementation Agreement and for their joint work in enabling greater prosperity for all Canadians. Canada is better when Alberta can contribute to its fullest potential.

Today’s announcement brings Canada closer to growing our potential as an energy superpower. The commitments regarding a new West Coast pipeline, and particularly the expedited review, are significant. Providing the world with more energy from a stable, reliable, and responsible producer is a role that Canada can, and should, fulfil.

However, BCA has long advocated for policy that keeps Alberta energy competitive on the world stage; today’s agreement will create competitiveness challenges due to the increasing industrial carbon price.

Realizing the full potential of the Canada-Alberta Memorandum of Understanding and Canada’s energy resources requires that the federal government moves urgently to deliver efficient and predictable regulatory approvals and works with the province and industry to create the investment climate that will support production growth needed for new pipeline commitments.

BCA will continue to work with both the provincial and federal governments to create the conditions for a strong, competitive Alberta — one that attracts investment and delivers prosperity for all Canadians.
