The Business Council of Alberta welcomes the Alberta Court of Appeal’s decision which found that the amended Impact Assessment Act (Bill C-69) still intrudes on provincial jurisdiction.
Federal project reviews must stay within federal jurisdiction and respect the constitutional jurisdiction of the provinces. The Court’s opinion reinforces the need for a clear, focused review system that avoids unnecessary overlap and gives greater certainty.
We encourage the Government of Canada to swiftly amend Bill C-69 to bring it in line with the delineation of powers as required by the initial Supreme Court ruling of 2023. Clear roles and predictable processes matter to businesses, communities and investors.
